Our mission is to support the transformation towards a more responsible use and production of natural resources, in line with the SDGs, and to promote sustainable practices across the entire commodity value chain.
Why 51° Natural Resources
In 2011, our initiative was founded as the “Commodity Club Switzerland”, driven by a vision to promote education around the world of commodities. Over the years, we’ve built a community that shares knowledge and insights, sparking important debates and fostering understanding through our educational initiatives. After 13 years, we are changing our name to 51° Natural Resources as we take the next step in our journey.
This new name and look is more than just a rebrand. They represent our progressive approach and innovative vision, and underline our renewed commitment and focus on sustainable standards and impact.
01. The power of nature
The Swiss town of Leukerbad inspired our new name. In Leukerbad hot springs bubble at a precise 51°C and are rich with a blend of sodium, calcium, and sulphate, providing a natural, sustainable energy source for the entire village. This balance between harnessing nature’s gifts and using them responsibly is the foundation of our ethos. It’s a powerful reminder that natural resources, when managed wisely, can sustain both communities and ecosystems.
02. Clear-cut scope
Commodities are a broad field. Like the precise temperature of Leukerbad’s springs, we’ve chosen to narrow our efforts to specific areas. Rather than aiming for full 360-degree coverage, we prioritize themes where we have a specialised and deep expertise, concentrating our activities in those areas.
03. Action on climate
The degree symbol signifies the urgency of tackling climate change and meeting the imperative of limiting the increase of global average temperatures well below 1,5°C (our number spelled backwards, included in our name), in line with the Paris Agreement. The commodities sector is at the heart of this challenge. From food production to energy systems and the materials that shape our cities, these industries are deeply intertwined with the use of raw materials.
